Keffer/Overton (K/O) was hired to restore the Horse Barn on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The project included replacement of and repointing of the masonry exterior. It also included the repair of windows and the entire replacement of the roof system with a new metal standing seam roof. With a fresh coat of paint and the exterior envelope repaired, the almost 500–stall horse barn was ready to continue serving the fair.
Several years after the major restoration was completed, a new, large indoor equestrian arena and exhibition building was connected to the end of the historic building, bringing a renewed purpose to this portion of the building. Master planning for the future of this building include reworking the some of the equine stall arrangements for greater flexibility, updating the mechanical, electrical and technology systems, and restroom upgrades.
